Hyssop and Spiritual Purification: Symbolism in the Old Testament and Christianity

This study is a powerful testament to the transformative nature of faith in Jesus. Regardless of your past or actions, placing your trust in Jesus leads to complete spiritual renewal and purification!

Let’s first look at 1 John 1:7-9,

 but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Even the Old Testament tells us this!

“Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
    wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” – Psalm 51:7

What is fascinating is the mention of hyssop. Exodus 12:22 also refers to it at a pivotal moment in the story of Moses.

Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and touch the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood in the basin. None of you shall go outside the door of your house until morning.

A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth.

“how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to worship the living God!”

Be blessed,

-Pastor Alex
